How to change a UPVC Espag Window Handle

Difficulty Level: Beginner

Any amateur DIYer will be capable of changing a UPVC window handle following this simple guide.

What tools are required?

Only very basic tools are required to change a UPVC espag window handle - most people will already have the bits required in their home. You will require:

  • A measuring tape or ruler.

  • Phillips screwdriver or Drill.

Removing the Old UPVC Window Handle

UPVC Window Handles are secured to the window by two screws. One will be obscured by a cover cap at the top of the handle, and the other will be hidden while the handle is shut, but visible once the handle is in an open position.

Use either a drill or screwdriver to remove the screws securing the handle - once removed, you will be able to pull the handle out of the frame.

Measuring a UPVC Window Handle Spindle

Largely any design of espag window handle will fit/suit the frame, the only relevant measurement is the spindle size. The spindle is the length of metal that sticks out the back of the window handle into the window frame.

To measure a spindle, simply use your measuring device to read the length of the metal rod protruding out the back of the window handle.

Usually, the bar will be 7mm square, but it can come in a range of lengths. Common sizes include 15mm, 20mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm and 43mm.
