How to replace a UPVC Door Handle
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
The majority of DIYers will be able to measure and replace the most common types of door handle, but some care does need to be taken.
What tools are required?
Only very simple tools are required, all of which most people already own. You will need:
A measuring tape or ruler.
Phillips screwdriver or drill.
Measuring/Identifying the Old UPVC Door Handle
When identifying handles there are several different types, but the most variants are long backplate, short backplate, lever pad, and offset lever lever - examples of which can be seen in the photo below.
When measuring old door handles, there are two key measurements.
The length labelled as 'A' is known as the PZ of a handle and is the length between the centre of the cylinder hole and the centre of the handle lever.
The length labelled as 'B' is the distance between the top and bottom screw/fixing hole centres.
Take note of these key measurements, and use this information to inform what replacement door handles to purchase.

Removing the Old Door Handles
UPVC Door handles are usually secured with screws on the internal side of the door - they are sometimes obscured by cover caps which may need removing if you're struggling to locate the fixings.
Using a screwdriver or drill, remove the screws completely, allowing you to pull the handles away from the door.
Installing the New UPVC Door Handles
To install the new handles, complete the same process in reverse.
Establish which handle is for the internal and which is the external, and ensure the handles are in the correct orientation.
With the prep work done, insert the spindle which will have come with your new handles into one handle, and slip the handle into position.
NOTE: If your handle requires a spring cassette, insert it over the top of the spindle within the handle.
Add the other handle to the opposite side, and use your screws to attach the two handles together through the door frame.
Test the operation of the handle before closing the door.
